EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said that Georgia should not react negatively to the European Union's refusal to grant it the status of an EU candidate.

As Borrell noted, Georgia needs to intensify its efforts to join the European Union.“For them, this is a step forward (recognition of a European perspective). They shouldn't take it negatively. Now they have a way, and things to do, and a schedule. So this is significant progress. Keep up the good work,” Borrell said.

For information, Ukraine and Moldova have received the status of a candidate member of the EU, and Georgia will have to fulfill the conditions for obtaining the status of a candidate.

On June 17, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that the European Commission recommended a European perspective for Ukraine and Moldova and granting candidate status on additional conditions.

It is also recommended to give Georgia a European perspective without granting candidate status. The final decision on the status of the candidate will be made by the European Council at a summit on June 23-24, which will be attended by heads of state, the President of the European Council and the head of the European Commission.
