According to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, Georgia and Ukraine have the right to choose their allies, while Russia has no right to dictate their choice.

As Stoltenberg said in Brussels at a briefing after a meeting with Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, NATO supports and recognizes the territorial integrity of Georgia.

According to Stoltenberg, NATO is once again calling on Russia to withdraw its troops from Georgia.

“We support the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia. We recognize the belonging of the regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia to Georgia and call on Russia to withdraw its troops. Today we discussed the security situation in the region, including the situation in Ukraine and the situation in the Black Sea region.

We said we must avoid escalation. Georgia and Ukraine have the right to choose their allies, while Russia has no right to dictate them choice. Georgia is a part of world history and will remain so. “We will continue to provide strong political support to our partners and strive to strengthen the defense capability of Georgia. We will also continue to conduct joint exercises and exchange information,” - Stoltenberg said.
