Former Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbaev, who has not appeared in public since mass protests and clashes began in the country in early January, delivered a video message.

According to Nazarbaev, there is no conflict or confrontation in the country's leadership, and he called the rumors about such a conflict groundless. Nazarbaev also said that since 2019, having transferred presidential powers to Kassym-Jomart Tokaev, he is a pensioner, "is on a well-deserved rest" in the capital of Kazakhstan and has not left anywhere.

According to Nursultan Nazarbaev, Tokaev has full power, is the head of the Security Council and will soon head the ruling party.

The riots that began against the backdrop of protests in early January, which led to heavy human casualties, Nazarbaev called "an attack on Kazakhstan" with the aim of "destroying the integrity of the country." He said that it is necessary to find out which forces organized the riots.

Nazarbaev is now 81 years old. He headed Kazakhstan for about 30 years, left the presidency in 2019, but remained the head of the Security Council and the ruling party for life, and his relatives and close associates continued to hold leading positions. In honor of Nazarbaev, the capital of Kazakhstan, Astana, was renamed Nur-Sultan, and he was called Elbasy, the leader of the nation.

Protests in Kazakhstan began on January 2 - initially demanding lower fuel prices. Subsequently, political demands were added to them.

In a number of cities, primarily in Almaty, riots and pogroms with the use of weapons began. The authorities of Kazakhstan stated that they were staged not by protesters, but by some terrorists trained from outside. At the request of Tokaev, the CSTO troops were brought into the country.

According to official figures, 225 people were killed in the January events in Kazakhstan, most of them civilians.
