More than 4,000 protesters and rioters have been detained in Kazakhstan in recent days.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Kazakhstan, most of the detainees face life imprisonment, since they are accused of terrorism. Most of the people were detained in the largest city in the country, Almaty. The exact death toll is still unknown.

According to the country's President Kassim-Zhomart Tokayev, "the counter-terrorist operation will continue until the complete destruction of the militants."

Protests against the rise in gas prices in a number of regions of Kazakhstan began on January 2. In a few days, they spread throughout the country.

It is not yet known how many people died in the clashes, although hundreds are believed to have died.

On January 7, Kazakh President Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev ordered the military to open fire to kill.
