“Our criteria are always general and never refer to any specific person, therefore, when it comes to a law on deoligarchization, we ask the country to have such a legal framework that would regulate this system,” - the European Commissioner for European Policy Neighborhood Oliver Varhei said at a press conference held in Tbilisi jointly with Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili.
According to Oliver Varhey, the European Union offers the Georgian government to send the law adopted by them to the Venice Commission for evaluation.

“Do you think that I know so much about Georgian politics? I do not think so. But what I do know is that there are very clear criteria for membership. The criteria do not refer to any particular person and cannot be applied, it is a framework that I proposed, whether it be the legal framework or the environment in which the media operates, which ensures that there will be freedom in this direction. People will have access to information, they will have access without restrictions to the media that provide information to the population. The same applies to the law on oligarchs. We, the EU, do not choose which oligarch is good and which is bad, because the idea is that these criteria are clearly defined.
No one should exert undue influence on political, legislative, legal decisions, for their own benefit. Our criteria are always general and never refer to any particular person. Therefore, when it comes to the law on deoligarchization, we ask the country to have a legal framework that would regulate this system. That is why we invite the government to submit this bill to the Venice Commission for evaluation and see how this legal instrument will bring the country closer to the goal defined by these priorities,” said Oliver Varhey.
