At least 288 people were killed on the evening of June 2, as a result of a train collision in the state of Odisha in eastern India. The number of victims, according to preliminary data, is about 900 people.

An official statement from the Government of India said that the Coromandel Express train from Howrah to Chennai derailed near Bahanaga station. In the area of the same station, the SMVB-HWH Superfast Exp fast train derailed on the route Sir M. Visvesvaraya Station - Howrah. Some media reports that the Coromandel Express derailed and collided with a freight train.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to the injured. Rescue work at the site continues.
