Georgian film director Eldar Shengelaya has died at the age of 92.

His body of work includes numerous unique films, among them: An Unusual Exhibition, The Eccentrics, Samanishvili’s Stepmother, and Blue Mountains, or an Improbable Story.

Eldar Shengelaya received his higher education in directing in Moscow, at the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography. From 1957 to 1959, he worked at the Mosfilm studio. In 1960, he joined the Georgia-Film studio. He made his directorial debut in 1963 together with Tamaz Meliava. The White Caravan depicts the hardships of a shepherd’s life. His next work was the 1964 screen adaptation of Davit Kldiashvili’s story Mikela. Later, in 1977, he returned to Kldiashvili’s work and filmed Samanishvili’s Stepmother (1977). Shengelaya gained widespread recognition through his collaboration with playwright Rezo Gabriadze.
