President of Georgia Mikheil Kavelashvili, together with Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili, Minister of Defense Irakli Chikovani, members of the government, and the Commander of the Defense Forces, Lieutenant General Giorgi Matiashvili, honored the memory of Georgian servicemen heroically killed on August 11, 2008, near the village of Shindisi, and laid a wreath at the memorial.
After the wreath-laying ceremony, the President spoke with the families of the Shindisi heroes and once again expressed his condolences.
According to Mikheil Kavelashvili, the Shindisi heroes left modern Georgia with the greatest example of heroism.
“Today we are in Shindisi to honor the memory of the bravest fighters — the Shindisi heroes — who left the modern generation of Georgia the greatest example of what a Georgian warrior, a Georgian person, should be. As long as heroes exist, we must all be confident that Georgia will always exist. It is precisely thanks to such feats, thanks to the actions of these people, that we have the guarantee that Georgia is immortal. Once again, I wish to honor and eternally remember these truly fearless heroes, who astonished the enemy and opponent by committing such an exemplary act of heroism. Glory and honor to their memory,” Mikheil Kavelashvili stated.
The Minister of Defense briefed government representatives on the progress of construction work on the Shindisi Heroes Memorial Complex.
At the site of the Battle of Shindisi, the Ministry of Defense of Georgia is building a memorial complex dedicated to the heroes. The construction of the museum space will be carried out in two phases, the first of which has already been completed.
The President of Georgia also attended a memorial service for the souls of the heroes in Shindisi.
