An unidentified individual opened fire in Manhattan, New York City, resulting in the deaths of four people, according to preliminary reports. One other person was seriously injured.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams urged residents to avoid the area where the incident occurred.
According to him, the list of victims includes 36-year-old police officer Didarul Islam.
FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino stated on social media that bureau agents had arrived at the scene to assist with the investigation.
The circumstances of the attack are still being clarified. Law enforcement officials are working at the scene to determine the motives behind the crime.
The New York Police Department (NYPD) issued a statement shortly after the incident to calm public fears.
“At present, the scene is secured, and the lone attacker has been neutralized,” NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch posted on her page on X.
Meanwhile, U.S. media, citing NYPD sources, report that the attacker died by suicide on the 33rd floor of a building on Park Avenue.
New York police confirmed that the shooter took his own life.
The attacker was identified as Shane Tamura, who had documented mental health issues.
