Israel’s Security Cabinet has approved a plan to “defeat” the Palestinian radical Islamist movement Hamas and take control of Gaza City. The decision was made following a late-night meeting of Israel’s top officials — despite growing international calls for an end to the war.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu earlier outlined several plans in an interview with Fox News, stating that Israel intends to take control of the entire Gaza Strip. Israeli forces already control about three-quarters of the enclave.
The Israel Defense Forces have repeatedly carried out airstrikes on Gaza City and conducted numerous raids there. However, it remains one of the few areas in the enclave that has not been turned into an Israeli buffer zone or evacuated.
A large-scale ground operation in this area could displace tens of thousands of people and make food deliveries even more difficult, the Associated Press noted.
