The leaders of Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to an “immediate and unconditional” ceasefire. This was announced by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim following negotiations held on July 28 at his residence.
The ceasefire is set to take effect at midnight on July 29.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet described the talks as “very good,” noting that the outcome will allow hundreds of thousands of people on both sides to return to normal life. According to him, the time is right “to begin rebuilding trust and confidence in the future between Cambodia and Thailand.”
Acting Thai Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai stated that the negotiations were held “in a spirit of goodwill,” adding that Thailand is committed to peace.
Clashes involving artillery and air strikes began on the Thailand–Cambodia border on July 24, just a few days after two Thai soldiers were killed by landmines that, according to official Bangkok, had been planted by Cambodians.
At least 33 people have been killed since the escalation of the conflict began.
