U.S. President Donald Trump, continuing his war of words with Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev, announced that he would deploy two American nuclear submarines to "appropriate regions" in response to Medvedev’s rhetorical threats. He did not specify which regions he meant.

"In light of the extremely provocative statements by former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, now Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, I have ordered two nuclear submarines to be stationed in the appropriate regions in case these reckless and incendiary remarks turn out to be more than just words. Words matter greatly and can often lead to unintended consequences. I hope that won’t be the case this time," Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social.

The political spat between the two has now entered its second day. It began on Wednesday when Trump announced a 25% tariff on India starting August 1, linking it to Moscow.

"India has always purchased the vast majority of its military equipment from Russia and is one of the largest buyers of Russian energy alongside China — all while the world wants Russia to stop the killings in Ukraine," Trump stated.

He later posted about it again, mentioning Medvedev:
"I don’t care what India does with Russia. They can destroy their dead economies together — it doesn’t matter to me. We have very little cooperation with India. Their tariffs are too high — nearly the highest in the world. Also, Russia and the U.S. have almost no joint business. Let’s keep it that way. And tell Medvedev — the failed former president of Russia who still thinks he’s president — to watch his mouth. Because he’s stepping into very dangerous territory."

It’s unclear exactly which of Medvedev’s remarks angered Trump. However, earlier in the week, the former Russian president responded to Trump’s demand that peace be achieved in Ukraine within 10 days by saying:
"Every new ultimatum from [Trump] is a threat and a step toward war. Not between Russia and Ukraine, but with his own country. Don’t follow the path of Sleepy Joe [Trump’s nickname for former President Joe Biden]."

In response to Trump’s harsh comments calling him a "failed" former president, Medvedev posted again on Telegram:
"Regarding Trump’s threats against me on his personal network, Truth, which he himself banned in our country — if a few words from a former Russian president cause such a nervous reaction from the mighty President of the United States, then that means Russia is absolutely right and will continue on its chosen path."
