It has been 33 years since the outbreak of hostilities in Abkhazia.
On August 14, 1992, units of the police and the National Guard of the Ministry of Defense of Georgia, under the command of Tengiz Kitovani and Soso Akhalaia, entered the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia.
The official reason given was to ensure the security of the Sochi–Zugdidi railway section.
The war between the Georgian government forces, Russian military units, and armed Abkhaz separatists lasted 13 months and ended on September 27, 1993, with the fall of Sukhumi, after which the separatists occupied the entire territory of Abkhazia.
As a result of the conflict, more than 10,000 peaceful Georgian civilians were killed. Hundreds of people went missing, were wounded, or maimed. More than 300,000 people became internally displaced persons.
