The German national basketball team claimed the European championship title by defeating Turkey 88–83 in the final match of the tournament held in Riga on Sunday, September 14. Two years ago, the Germans also won the basketball world championship in Manila.
This is the second time the FRG national team has become European basketball champion. They first claimed the title in 1993. “Germany in basketball — world champion and European champion. We are exactly where we belong — and we still have a couple of really good players at home,” said NBA star Franz Wagner, commenting on the victory.
The decisive points in the last minute were scored by team captain Dennis Schröder, who was named the most valuable player of the match.
Retired German basketball legend Dirk Nowitzki congratulated the team, writing on X: “European champions!!!!”
Former German tennis star Boris Becker expressed himself similarly in his microblog: “Yessssss!!!! We won, and we are European champions!”
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz also congratulated the basketball team: “World champions and European champions — what a sensational achievement. Congratulations to our national German team on this magnificent European Championship and this thrilling final. We are proud of you; you are an inspiration to young athletes,” he emphasized in his tweet.
